History of the Greendale Church

The Greendale Primitive Methodist Church is located in the wide fertile valley of the Jerrawa Creek about two kilometres west of Dalton, NSW. Greendale is the resting place of Arthur and Jeremiah Bush and many of their relatives and descendants.

It was erected in 1862 on land donated by James Bush. Most of the labor was voluntary. The building is made mainly of stone, which was carted by James Bush with his horse and wagon. The foundation stone was laid on Monday 31 March 1862 by Edward Newman. The early ministers travelled from Crookwell, which involved a days travel each way by horse and buggy.

The church building has stone walls with an outer cement rendering. There is no alter or vestry, the pulpit dominates the church, reflecting the emphasis on bible reading and preaching. The furniture includes a small foot pedal organ – requiring a capable musician of strong stamina. A roster system was worked out between the various member families to provide a regular change of organist.
